2018 Chevrolet Camaro Review

The iconic Chevrolet Camaro, just past its 50th Anniversary, hasn’t changed that much for the 2018 model year, but one thing is for certain: Camaro delivers more than its price might suggest. The Gen VI Camaro starts off at just $26,900+ for the 1LS coupe, but prices quickly increase for each trim package, up to $62,135+ for the ZL1. Tick off all the boxes on the Camaro ZL1 Convertible, and one might top $71,000, but in a performance bracket topped only by cars at twice the price. In general, pricing follows power and technology, of which there is plenty of variation to mix and match, depending on budget and preference.

One thing that the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro delivers in spades is style; an aggressive stance that looks more at home on a race track than on the street. Outside, the Camaro is retro-design in modern dress, a good-looking car that will be sure to turn some heads. Even at lower trim levels, Camaro pulls off looking like a million bucks without forcing its drivers to pay the price. Inside, Camaro is clearly designed for style and features some high-quality materials, but still could use some improvement. It’s a 2+2 coupe, which doesn’t make this much of a family car, and some may find that the high hood and door lines restrict visibility.

Trim levels add successively-greater power, technology, performance, and appearance features, such as electrochromatic self-dimming mirrors, automatic climate control, leather seats and upholstery, infotainment system, performance brakes, and larger aluminum wheels, to name a few. Still, Camaro fans will find something to love at all trim levels.

Performance

Under the hood, like inside and outside, are four engine options, a turbocharged 2.0, naturally-aspirated 3.6 V6 and 6.2 V8, and a supercharged 6.2 V8. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels via a 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmission, available paired with the first three engine options. An optional 10-speed automatic is available for the supercharged V8. All Camaros feature some level of aggressive spring rates and tight steering, putting any available power to good use.

  • Camaro LS and LT models feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter i4, putting out 275 hp and 295 lb•ft of torque. Able to sprint to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, it’s certainly not the most powerful, but no slouch, either, and it’ll still deliver 30-31 MPG highway fuel economy, depending on transmission option.
  • Stepping up to the optional 3.6-liter V6, available on LS and LT trims, increases weight and performance by an appreciable margin, up to 335 hp and 284 lb•ft of torque, shaving 0.3 seconds from the 60-mph sprint and a couple highway MPGs.
  • The standard engine for Camaro SS models is the 6.2-liter V8, putting out an impressive 455 hp and 455 lb•ft of torque to the rear wheels. With a 4.0-second 60-mph sprint time, the SS still manages to squeak out 25 mpg highway, better than economy cars of yesteryear.
  • If anything, the ZL1’s supercharged V8, putting out 650 hp and 650 lb•of torque, tells us there’s really no such thing as too much power. Fortunately, ZL1’s other options keep all that power in check, for smooth launch to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds, and as much fun as you care to extract from it.

Despite any of the 2018 Chevrolet Camaro’s faults, it’s style simply can’t be beaten. Is it perfect? No, but then again, it isn’t quite like any of the competition. It is unique enough to call our attention and fun enough to keep it.
