Car Parts Not from These Parts – Vehicles with No US or Canadian Parts

Parts 1The average automobile, whether it’s a thrifty commuter or rugged work truck or anything in between, is an impressive conglomeration of electrical, hydraulic, chemical, and mechanical parts – estimates range over 30,000 – which automakers source from a number of places. In other words, Tesla Motors might have a factory in Fremont, California, but it’s sourcing parts from around the world to put together its world class electric vehicles. Arguably the most critical components, lithium and graphite, for battery production, and millions of Panasonic lithium-ion cells, come from overseas.

Of course, Tesla Motors isn’t the only vehicle sold in the United States and Canada that have parts from around the world. Increasing globalization is now making it possible that some future vehicle contains all foreign parts – that time is already here. According to a 2016 NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) report, here are dozens of 2016 models that don’t even contain a single percentage point of US or Canadian content:

Lots to Choose From

Considering that there are over 400 models and variants available in the United States, those looking to “buy American” and “support American jobs” might be surprised at the models that might be considered decidedly not. Really, it’s not much of a surprise that every single one on this list is European or Asian, but it does one well to note a couple of other points in the NHTSA ranking. For example, while the Honda CR-Z is 100% foreign, the Honda Pilot is actually 75% US/Canadian, right up there with the Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, and Toyota Camry. The Honda Accord is 80% US/Canadian, along with the GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse. Surprisingly, America’s best-selling vehicle for the last 35 years, the Ford F150, is only 70% US/Canadian content. Just so you know, there are only 19 models you can get that have over 70% US/Canadian content:

  1. Chevrolet Traverse
  2. GMC Acadia
  3. Honda Accord
  4. Honda Pilot
  5. Honda Odyssey
  6. Toyota Camry
  7. Toyota Sienna
  8. Dodge Grand Caravan
  9. Dodge Viper
  10. Jeep Wrangler 4 Door
  11. Chrysler Town & Country
  12. Jeep Wrangler 2 Door
  13. Ford Edge
  14. Ford F150
  15. Acura RDX 2WD
  16. Acura RDX AWD
  17. Honda CR-V
  18. Honda Civic
  19. Toyota Avalon

Still, even if you aren’t buying a car with 100% US/Canadian parts in it – 80% is the maximum anyway – keeping your vehicle regularly maintained and promptly repairing any problems is the surest way to support your local economy and keep your own vehicle in great shape.
