The much anticipated, and sometimes contested, annual cruise event has come upon us. The Woodward Dream Cruise of 2016 is nearly a week away, with many drivers, collectors, and spectators getting themselves and their vehicles ready. The Woodward event takes place on Woodward Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, which is actually the first concrete road in America. This year, event planners expect more than one million to attend! Although the event technically only happens on the third Saturday of August, the celebration and partying starts well before that. The Woodward Dream Cruise brings about a week-long event, which encourages people from all over to make an appearance.
Why is it contested by some? The one million people that show up for this northern Detroit event is one million more people than originally in that area. The road stretches from the Detroit/Canadian border, located at the Detroit River, up to Pontiac. On that road, locals who are traveling for everyday life have an extremely difficult time in their commute. At the different intersections and roads, events are set up for general cruising, partying, racing, eating, and a whole lot more. With a long stretch of over 16 miles being filled by cars, people, and more cars, the frustration level of some grows, not to mention the fact that this one day event has turned into a week long.
If you are not one of the frustrated Woodward Cruise haters, though, then you are probably excited about the upcoming cruise. In that case, get ready for a week of pure adrenaline. Along the 16-mile stretch, different miniature events will be set up for the day of, or days preceding, the Saturday of the Woodward Dream Cruise. Some Ferndale events include: Emergency Vehicle Show; Classics & Cruis’n Legends Vehicle Show; Mustang Alley; Woodward Dream Cruise Ribbon Cutting Ceremony; Light & Siren Cruise. In Berkley, there will be general cruising, as well as a classic car parade at 12 Mile Road. Pontiac, where Woodward avenue terminates, will have cruising along the loop as well as a full week of programming during Pontiac Power Week 2016.
Most everyone along Woodward joins in with the visitors, to celebrate this annual car festival. Whether you are a local enjoying the town’s biggest celebration of the year, or a traveler from far off looking for a good time with cars and car enthusiasts, you will not be disappointed. This year Woodward avenue is pulling out all the stops, not the stop signs, and is going to make this year the biggest Woodward Dream Cruise yet!
The date for the Woodward Dream Cruise 2016 August 20th, from 9-9 and is free admission. Many events will be taking place throughout the week, so don’t miss out!
